Neuropsychological Assessment

Neuropsychological assessment is a specialization within the field of psychology. Neuropsychologists have advanced specialized training in the evaluation of brain-behavior relationships using standardized, objective, paper and pencil tests that measure a variety of cognitive abilities. The cognitive and psychological areas that are measured include intelligence, mental speed, attention and concentration, language and verbal memory, visual-spatial skills and visual memory, learning and academic achievement, complex problem solving, impulse control, mental capacity, and psychological symptoms.

In addition to a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Goldberg has two years of post-doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology. She specializes in diagnosis of children, adolescents, and adults with a range of presenting complaints and uses reliable, standardized measures and tests to determine psychological, neuropsychological, and adaptive functioning.

Testing is conducted in a culture, language, and ethnically sensitive manner to appropriately identify cognitive and emotional deficits that may be contributing to a person's behavioral or thinking problems.

Written reports provide valuable information about a patient's brain functioning (cognitive and psychological) to physicians, patients, parents, and families in order to assist in treatment and service planning.

In cases of traumatic brain injury, disability, stroke, or dementia, a series of evaluations can determine whether changes in a patient's functioning are occurring over time. It is not always necessary to conduct serial evaluations; for diagnostic purposes, one evaluation is typically sufficient.
